The Poetry Group has been together now for over ten years and is thriving. When we first started we were going to use the first hour to listen to published works and the second hour for members who wrote their own poetry. This never happened, we read the poems in no particular order. What we don't do is analyse the poems, we believe that poems are there to be enjoyed in their own right. What does happen though is the poems create subjects for both serious and humorous discussion. What they also do sometimes is provoke memories both happy and sad, these too are related to the group. The discussions often lead us into tangents to completely different subjects sometimes, but we do eventually read the poems chosen by the members of our group.
The format now is based on subjects; at the end of each year the leader asks for suggestions for subjects and a subject is chosen at random to form a list for the next year and Members seek out or write poems on that subject for each of the eleven months, we do not meet in December. We have discussed many subjects - music, paintings, Shakespeare, nature, America, The day after the night before, working the land, all the fun of the fair - to name but a few.
We meet at Wallace House at 1:30pm on the last Wednesday of the month.
I have added a sub-page showing some of the different Types of Poems that can be used.
