August 25: Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead

A 2021 novel that intertwines the lives of a pioneering female aviator, Marian Graves, and a modern actress, Hadley Baxter, exploring themes of ambition, identity, and self-determination.

Our comments included:

  • Extremely good, embraces many significant aspects of history
  • The two women characters were very different although their lives were linked
  • The language is very descriptive and lyrical
  • Great writing about early flight
  • Many topics were covered
  • I really enjoyed it, it was well written
  • I will be looking for more by this author
  • The two parallel stories worked well
  • I could relate to the characters
  • I loved it
  • I would read this again
  • The ending was surprising
  • This book read like a complicated puzzle with many characters and story lines
  • I found it hard to follow in places and thought there was too much for one book
  • All the minor characters were fleshed out well
  • It covered a broad scope and brought alive the places and settings
  • I enjoyed it, though I got a bit fed up with Hadley!

Overall, we enjoyed Great Circle, thought it had a wide appeal and would recommend it to others.
