The author describes various trips to the Arctic, travelling counterclockwise around the North Pole, through territories belonging to Russia, the US, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Finland. She witnesses the mounting pollution concentrated at the Pole and the effects of this, and recounts how the exploitation of natural resources in this region, as well as global warming, are affecting the people and animals who live there, and their ways of life.
Our comments included:
- The Author gave herself a wide canvas; the book is part travelogue, including history, geography, and the anthropology of the native peoples, and more….
- An interesting read/ I’m glad I read it/ I found it very educational/ I found it really tedious/ I found it academic/ I found I needed to read a lighter book alongside it/ it couldn’t be described as an enjoyable read.
- I wanted a proper map/ the maps were very useful.
- Inevitably a depressing narrative.
- I struggled with the scientific details.
